Sophie Frances Pascoe, MNZM, (born 8 January 1993 in Christchurch, New Zealand)[1] is a New Zealand paralympics swimmer, most notable for her performance at the 2008 Summer Paralympics, winning a gold and a silver medal for the 100 m breaststroke and 100 m butterfly respectively and later a gold for the women's 200 m individual medley.[2] Pascoe then had to share a gold medal for the 100 m backstroke when she drew first with South African Shireen Sapiro.[3] A lawn mower accident at the age of 2 led to the loss of one of her legs below the knee. At only 15 years of age, Pascoe was New Zealand's youngest at the Beijing paralympics,[4] and the youngest ever New Zealander to win a medal.[5]
She trains at QE2 club in Christchurch under coach Roly Critchon. Pascoe has just recently claimed the title of New Zealand's favorite Paralympic Athlete in a nationwide voting competition. For this she has won a Mitsubishi VRX outlander.[6]
